"Silence, calm and peace" — that's what Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos says Lionel Messi needs right now. Whether that's compatible with a Saturday MLS clash against Nashville, Hoyos flatly refused to say.
The situation is as delicate as it gets. Messi's father, Jorge, died last Saturday in Rosario at 68. Within days, Messi had flown to Argentina for a private memorial service, returned to Florida, and came off the bench in a Leagues Cup elimination loss to Leon on Wednesday — a 3-2 defeat that ended Inter Miami's run in the competition. That he played at all says something about his commitment. That he probably shouldn't have had to is worth saying too.
A two-point gap that's about to get complicated
The timing is genuinely difficult for the club's season. Inter Miami sit second in MLS with 38 points from 18 games — 11 wins, five draws, two losses. Nashville are top on 40 points, and they're this Saturday's opponents. Two points separate the sides. Messi's presence or absence doesn't just affect the result; it affects Inter Miami's entire trajectory toward the Supporters' Shield.
After Nashville, the schedule doesn't ease up: Philadelphia Union on August 19, Toronto FC at home on August 22, then CF Montreal on August 29. Four fixtures in roughly two weeks, each one meaningful for their standing. The math is unforgiving even when the human circumstances aren't.
Hoyos, for his part, isn't pretending any of that pressure changes what Messi needs. "This is not something that happens from one day to the next," he said. "I think silence, calm and peace are what's best, and for him to find his own moments."
He also offered something that felt less like a press conference quote and more like a genuine observation: "He truly is a wonderful human being with a wonderful family. People like that aren't common in this world."
Whoever starts against Nashville, Inter Miami's Supporters' Shield odds just got harder to read. And right now, that's the least of anyone's concerns inside that dressing room.
