"David Beckham mentioned that to me many times," Kylian Mbappe said on Sunday. "We will see, I don't know."

That's not a no. From a 27-year-old tied to Real Madrid until 2029, it's about as open a door as you're going to get. Beckham has been quietly working this angle, and Mbappe is clearly listening — even if an MLS move is years away from being a real decision.

The Messi blueprint changed everything

Before Lionel Messi signed with Inter Miami in July 2023 at age 36, an MLS move meant one thing: the end. A farewell lap with a bigger salary. Messi flipped that script entirely — back-to-back MLS MVP awards, an MLS Cup title, and a franchise transformed from a punchline into the league's most recognizable brand globally.

That's the pitch Beckham is making to Mbappe. Not retirement. Reinvention.

Mbappe even gave away how receptive he is to the broader idea: "The American culture is different, there are no limits to ambitions, I like it." That's not a man brushing off a hypothetical. That's someone who's thought about it.

2029 is the earliest this gets real

The contract math is simple. Mbappe doesn't become a genuine MLS target until he's in his early thirties, assuming Real Madrid don't move him on sooner. Right now, he's deep into France's World Cup campaign — he scored twice in their 3-1 opening win over Senegal on June 16, and Les Bleus face Iraq in Philadelphia on June 22. He has a Golden Boot to defend and a second World Cup winner's medal to chase. MLS isn't on his radar in any practical sense this summer.

But Beckham planting the seed now is exactly how these long-game recruitments work. He did it with Messi too — that wasn't a one-phone-call deal.

  • Mbappe is contracted to Real Madrid through 2029
  • He scored a brace in France's opening World Cup win over Senegal
  • Beckham confirmed he has spoken to Mbappe about MLS "many times"
  • Messi signed with Inter Miami at 36 and has since won back-to-back MLS MVP awards

Any futures market on Mbappe's next club after Real Madrid will have MLS odds worth watching as this story develops. Right now those odds are long. But Beckham has done this before, and Mbappe's answer wasn't a dismissal — it was a shrug that left the door open.
