Bradley Barcola has apparently told Liverpool yes. Now Liverpool have to convince Paris Saint-Germain — and that's the part nobody's sorted out yet.
L'Equipe reported Tuesday that the 23-year-old winger has verbally committed to joining the Reds after conversations with head coach Andoni Iraola, describing it as a "decisive step in this saga." But formal negotiations with PSG haven't started. There's no bid on the table. The gap between a player's verbal agreement and an actual transfer can be enormous — especially when the selling club is in no rush.
Why PSG's position just got harder to crack
The context here matters. PSG had been pursuing RB Leipzig midfielder Yan Diomande as a potential replacement that might have freed them to sell Barcola. That deal collapsed spectacularly on Sunday, with PSG releasing an official statement withdrawing their interest and taking pointed shots at "inflationary and manipulative games of certain player agents." It's the kind of public statement clubs make when they're embarrassed — and it leaves them without a ready-made Barcola replacement.
With two years left on his contract and little appetite to extend at Parc des Princes, Barcola is entering a familiar limbo: a player who wants out, a club that hasn't found its next signing, and an asking price that will breach £100 million. Arsenal have also been sniffing around. The competition doesn't make this cheaper.
Liverpool, for their part, have already shown what they're willing to spend. They tabled a bid of up to £86 million for Diomande last month before that pursuit ended. A nine-figure outlay for Barcola is a step up, but not an outlandish one given the vacancy Salah's departure has left on the right side.
Iraola has been clear about what he needs
The Liverpool manager hasn't been cryptic about it. At a press conference in Chicago last week he said bluntly: "A winger — we definitely need to sign a winger." The club already brought in Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5 million, but Iraola has framed that as the start of the rebuild, not the end of it.
Barcola offers pace, directness, and Champions League experience at 23. That profile fits exactly what Iraola is describing. The question is whether Liverpool can move fast enough to force PSG's hand before the window tightens and the Parisians decide Barcola is staying whether he likes it or not.
Right now the deal exists entirely in the player's head. Getting it out of there and onto paper is the actual job — and it hasn't started yet.
