Harry Kane's representatives told Barcelona no. Politely, quickly, and apparently without much deliberation — because Kane has no interest in leaving Bayern Munich, and the numbers back up exactly why.
61 goals in 51 games last season. A domestic treble. Three goals in three World Cup games, making him England's all-time leading scorer at the tournament. The 32-year-old is at the peak of his powers, already in talks over a new contract at the Allianz Arena. Barcelona's approach was dead on arrival.
The Lewandowski problem isn't going away
The urgency behind this is real, though. Robert Lewandowski's contract expires June 30, and he's reportedly heading to Chicago Fire on a two-year MLS deal. That leaves Hansi Flick's side — La Liga champions back-to-back — without a recognised number nine heading into next season.
Kane was always going to be a long shot. A player that settled, that productive, with a new contract on the table doesn't walk away from a project mid-run. Barcelona knew this. It reads more like a due-diligence call than a genuine pursuit.
Their more realistic route appears to run through Julian Alvarez. Barcelona are still trying to prise the Argentina striker away from Atletico Madrid this summer — a deal that would make considerably more sense given Alvarez's age, contract situation, and Atletico's historically negotiable stance when the price is right.
Gyokeres isn't interested either
Meanwhile, Viktor Gyokeres was asked about links to Barcelona and Atletico Madrid during the World Cup, and he gave the kind of answer that actually sounds genuine rather than managed.
"I feel extremely comfortable at Arsenal," he said. "After the season we have had, I only have positive feelings."
Hard to argue. Gyokeres helped Arsenal win their first league title in 22 years, scored 21 times across all competitions in his debut season at the Emirates, and has a contract running until 2030. He has very little reason to move and he knows it.
For Barcelona's title odds next season, the striker situation is the single biggest variable. Alvarez is the name to watch — Kane and Gyokeres were never really on the table.
