Well, that escalated quickly – and then de-escalated just as fast. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga are back in the Gabon national team picture. The two stars had been kicked out after their country's dismal Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco.

Here's what went down: Gabon couldn't win a single game at the tournament. Not one. The government responded with the nuclear option – they suspended the entire squad, expelled Aubameyang and Manga, and fired head coach Thierry Mouyouma along with his entire coaching staff. It was a complete meltdown.

The dramatic announcements came from interim sports minister Simplice-Désiré Mamboula right after Gabon's final group match against Ivory Coast on December 31. Talk about a New Year's Eve nobody wanted.

New Minister, Fresh Start

But things have changed fast. Gabon appointed a new sports minister on January 3 – Paul Ulrich Kessany, who's actually a former Gabon player himself. He clearly sees things differently than his predecessor.

The Gabonese Football Federation announced Monday that the government has lifted all those harsh measures. Aubameyang and Manga are no longer excluded. The squad suspension is over. However, there's one thing that hasn't changed – Mouyouma and his coaching staff are still out of a job.

Kessany wrote to the federation emphasizing upcoming priorities, especially the draw for the 2027 Africa Cup qualifiers. He's pushing them to get moving on finding a new coaching setup quickly. Time waits for no one in international football.

What This Means Going Forward

For Gabon, having Aubameyang back is massive. He's their most talented player and brings genuine star power to the team. Manga's experience in defense is equally valuable as they try to rebuild.

The real question now is who takes over as coach. That decision will shape Gabon's chances in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers and could significantly impact their betting odds for future tournaments. A strong appointment could quickly restore confidence in this talented but underperforming squad.

It's been a wild few weeks for Gabonese football. Let's see if this fresh start can turn things around.
