Remember Harvey Elliott? The brief glimpse of him in Aston Villa's Christmas video might be the most screen time he's had in months. The on-loan Liverpool midfielder has virtually disappeared since his deadline day move.

Elliott has played just 96 minutes in the Premier League for Villa and made only one start. That's a shocking fall from grace for a player who was England U21's star at Euro 2025 just five months ago.

His move to Villa Park came with an obligation to buy after 10 appearances. He's currently stuck at five, leaving him in an awkward limbo between two clubs.

From Hotshot to Forgotten Man

Villa's interest seemed genuine back in August. Both Monchi and manager Unai Emery reportedly pushed for the deal, beating out competition from RB Leipzig and West Ham.

Elliott himself was clear about his motivation: "The most important thing for me when I was making the decision was to be playing first-team football." Oh, the irony.

His only Premier League start came against Fulham, where he was subbed off at halftime. He scored on his full debut in the Carabao Cup against Brentford, but hasn't featured in the Premier League since September.

His last appearance for Villa? Four minutes as a sub against Feyenoord on October 2nd. That was over two months ago.

The situation seems to boil down to money. Villa apparently don't want to trigger the £35m permanent deal, with profit and sustainability rules coming into play. There are also whispers that Elliott hasn't shown the quality Villa expected.

Emery has been typically guarded when discussing the situation. "There are other players performing very well. This is the first argument of why he is not playing," he said last week.

Morgan Rogers has emerged as one of England's rising stars, while Emi Buendia has surprisingly become key for Emery. Both are blocking Elliott's preferred number 10 position.

What Happens Next?

Elliott's World Cup hopes are fading fast. Former England U21 teammates Elliot Anderson and Alex Scott have already earned senior call-ups while Elliott warms the bench.

A return to Liverpool seems unlikely – there's no recall clause, and the Reds have already budgeted for his sale and wage removal. But something needs to change.

For bettors keeping tabs on Villa's squad depth, Elliott's situation means Rogers and Buendia remain safer bets for consistent minutes. His absence hasn't hurt Villa's impressive form, with the club continuing to exceed expectations in both domestic and European competitions.

The next two weeks could determine Elliott's fate. At just 22 years old with 201 career appearances already, wasting an entire season could severely impact his development and market value.

He left Liverpool as a Premier League winner looking for regular football. Instead, he's found himself watching from the sidelines as both his former and current clubs thrive without him.
