Manchester United's veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton has verbally agreed to a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford past his 40th birthday. The 39-year-old's current deal was set to expire at the end of this month, but he appears ready to commit his future to the club.

Heaton, who has been one of United's reserve goalkeepers since rejoining in 2021, hasn't been a regular starter but remains a valued squad member. According to The Sun, this agreement comes as United look to rebuild following their worst Premier League season in recent memory.

The Red Devils finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League under manager Ruben Amorim. This shocking underperformance has triggered significant changes at the club, with United already releasing ten players earlier this week.

United's Summer Rebuild Underway

The club has begun its summer transfer business by signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5 million. They're also in talks to bring Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo to Old Trafford as their second major signing.

Despite Amorim reportedly describing his squad as the worst in United's history during their struggles last season, keeping experienced players like Heaton shows a balanced approach to rebuilding. His presence provides valuable leadership in the dressing room even when he's not on the pitch.

Heaton originally joined United's academy from Wrexham in 2002 as a teenager. Though he never made a competitive appearance during his first spell, he went on to build an impressive career elsewhere before returning in 2021.

The goalkeeper is best known for his time at Burnley, where he made 200 appearances between 2013 and 2019. He's also played for Cardiff City, Bristol City, and Aston Villa during his career.

Academy Connection Maintained

When announcing their released players list, United specifically mentioned ongoing discussions with Heaton. They described him as "a highly valued part of the goalkeeping group and wider squad" in their statement.

For fantasy football players and those betting on United's prospects next season, this move suggests Amorim values squad cohesion alongside new signings. It indicates United will blend experience with fresh talent rather than completely overhauling the squad.

Since returning to United, Heaton has made three first-team appearances. While he's unlikely to challenge for the starting position, his experience and professionalism make him valuable behind the scenes.

With pre-season approaching, United fans will be watching closely to see how Amorim shapes his squad. The retention of club veterans like Heaton could prove important for team stability as they look to bounce back from last season's disappointment.
