Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas is optimistic about keeping Lionel Messi beyond his current contract. Talks are ongoing for an extension that would see the Argentine superstar stay with the club through the opening of their new stadium in 2026.

Messi signed with Inter Miami in July 2023 on a 2-½-year deal that runs until the end of the 2025 MLS season. His impact has been immediate and massive for the Florida club.

"My wish would be for the number 10 to inaugurate our new stadium in March," Mas told ESPN in a recent interview. "This is Messi's decision. We wish for him to finish his career here."

Since joining Miami, Messi has transformed the club's fortunes. He led them to the 2023 Leagues Cup trophy and helped secure the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield while breaking the league record for most points in a season.

Mas believes Miami has created the perfect environment for the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner. "We have done everything possible for Leo to feel at home and comfortable. He is a competitive animal who wants to win."

The Barcelona Connection

Messi isn't the only Barcelona legend at Inter Miami. The club also features his former teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suárez.

Alba has already committed his future to Miami with a contract extension through 2027. However, both Busquets and Suárez have contracts that expire at the end of 2025 – the same timeframe as Messi's current deal.

"For Suárez and Busquets, it's up to them if they stay," Mas explained. "With Suárez, I think the question is physical, not emotional. And Busquets is more than welcome at this club – he's been an extraordinary leader."

Having this Barcelona core together in Miami has proven to be a winning formula. It creates an attractive proposition for bettors looking at MLS markets, with Miami likely to remain favorites while these stars are on their roster.

Global Ambitions

Inter Miami is preparing to compete in the Club World Cup against Palmeiras, FC Porto, and Al Ahly in Group A. This tournament represents a major step up in competition.

Mas has bold ambitions for his club. "I want to be the best team in the hemisphere, including teams in South and Central America."

He even dreams of Miami one day competing in Copa Libertadores. "It's a tournament that Messi has not played in. I think we can compete with the hemisphere's best."

For now, Miami kicks off the Club World Cup on June 14 against Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium. Their performance will be closely watched by fans and bettors alike, as it will reveal how the MLS champions stack up against international competition.

If Messi does extend his stay as Mas hopes, Inter Miami will likely remain a dominant force in MLS and potentially grow into a global football powerhouse. This would cement their status as a team to back in both domestic and international competitions.
