'The Soccer Showman' is at it again! Nathan Davies, a 50-year-old British freestyle footballer, has kicked off an incredible challenge today. He's attempting to juggle a football continuously for over 100 kilometers across Qatar, from Dukhan Beach to Doha Corniche.
This isn't just any football trick. Davies plans to perform 'keepy-uppies' – keeping the ball in the air without letting it touch the ground – for the entire journey. The four-day challenge will see him covering around 30km daily before finishing the final 10km stretch on Thursday.
Davies is no stranger to breaking records. He already holds four world titles including most consecutive shoulder touches (5,897), heel touches (283), forehead rolls (2,048), and knee touches (6,539). This new challenge could cement his legacy as one of football's greatest freestylers.
Why Qatar for the Record Attempt?
"Qatar ticked all the boxes," Davies explained in a recent interview. "The climate this time of year is perfect, and it's mostly flat terrain with no big hills. Plus, after hosting the World Cup, it has a great football connection."
The New Jersey-based footballer has been training intensively since September. His preparation included increasing walking distances, adding strength routines, and focusing on recovery techniques. All this while running his football school back home.
Weather conditions and desert terrain will be his biggest obstacles. Maintaining focus on the ball for hours each day will test both his physical and mental limits. Davies starts each morning at 6am and continues until about 3pm daily.
Mental Game as Important as Skill
"I try to just keep focus on making contact in the middle of the ball," Davies shared about his technique. "Once I get past one or two miles, I get into a flow. Then it's about avoiding negative thoughts and staying in that zone."
His passion for both football and endurance comes from his upbringing. Davies grew up in a family of runners with a marathon-running father. He fell in love with football at age 11 and discovered freestyling at 13 after watching a world champion perform.
Fans in Qatar can follow his journey on Instagram @soccershowman. Locals are encouraged to cheer him on, especially as he approaches the Corniche on Thursday. Some lucky supporters might even get to walk alongside the record-breaking attempt.
While there are no official betting markets on Davies completing his challenge, the odds would surely favor success given his track record. His previous achievements demonstrate remarkable skill and endurance that few can match in the freestyle football world.
This unusual sporting challenge highlights Qatar's continued relevance in the football world after hosting the 2022 World Cup. The flat terrain and December climate that once appealed to FIFA officials are now serving Davies well in his record attempt.
