Former Super Eagles Defender Blasts Chelle for Taiwo Awoniyi Exclusion.

Eric Chelle has released his first Super Eagles squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and it's already stirring up controversy. The new head coach, appointed in January, unveiled a provisional 39-man squad that will be trimmed to 23 before crucial matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Nigeria currently sits fifth in Group C with just three points from four games. They're above only Zimbabwe but trail Rwanda, Benin Republic, South Africa, and Lesotho. The upcoming fixtures on March 21 and 25 are absolute must-wins if the Super Eagles want any shot at reaching the World Cup in North America.

Awoniyi's Surprising Omission Raises Eyebrows

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Elijah didn't hold back when discussing Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi's exclusion. "It is not justified. Sincerely to exclude Taiwo Awoniyi, who has been part of the team for a very long time," Elijah told All Nigeria Soccer.

"He didn't have the chance to express himself, unfortunately, he was ruled out due to injuries. But when he was invited to play for his country, he has made his marks," he continued. "And how can you call up thirty-nine players without Taiwo Awoniyi? To me it is unfair."

Awoniyi has struggled for consistent playing time at Nottingham Forest this season, often serving as backup to in-form striker Chris Wood. He's made 24 appearances but started just six times, with only two starts coming in the Premier League. His goal tally stands at just two for the campaign.

Despite his limited minutes, Awoniyi's exclusion is particularly notable given the sheer size of the provisional squad. Eight new players received call-ups, including three from the domestic Nigeria Premier Football League.

Notable Returns and Squad Decisions

While Awoniyi misses out, veteran Ahmed Musa makes a surprising return to the national team. The former captain hasn't featured for the Super Eagles since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, marking a two-year absence.

Chelle's squad selections could significantly impact Nigeria's World Cup qualifying hopes. With the team already struggling in their group, these choices might determine whether fans will be betting on Super Eagles matches in the 2026 World Cup or watching from home.

Interestingly, Awoniyi recently suffered a broken nose during Nottingham Forest's FA Cup win over Exeter City. He'll be wearing a protective mask similar to Victor Osimhen when he returns to action for Forest, who are enjoying an impressive season sitting third in the Premier League.

For Nigerian football fans and bettors alike, all eyes will be on how Chelle's final 23-man selection performs in these crucial qualifiers. The new coach's decisions are already being scrutinized, and results against Rwanda and Zimbabwe will either validate his choices or intensify the criticism.
