Carlos Vela, one of MLS's brightest stars, has officially called time on his illustrious career. The 36-year-old Mexican forward announced his retirement on Tuesday after seven spectacular seasons with Los Angeles FC.

Vela joined LAFC as their first designated player back in 2017, before the expansion club had even played their first game. Talk about getting in on the ground floor! He quickly established himself as the face of the franchise, becoming LAFC's all-time leader in goals (78), assists (59), and games played (152).

"Helping to build LAFC and winning trophies for the club is a highlight of my career," Vela said in his retirement statement. "This club means so much to me and my family, and I am proud of everything we have accomplished together with the great fans of Los Angeles."

Record-Breaking MVP Season

Vela's time in MLS peaked during his remarkable 2019 campaign. He shattered the league's single-season scoring record with an incredible 34 goals, earning him the MLS MVP award. That same year, he helped LAFC capture the Supporters' Shield as the league's best regular-season team.

The Mexican star wasn't done there. He led LAFC to their first MLS Cup championship in 2022, adding another Supporters' Shield trophy that same season. For bettors who backed LAFC during Vela's prime years, the rewards were substantial as the team consistently ranked among the favorites in championship markets.

Vela's departure from active play had been brewing for some time. His contract expired after the 2023 season, and though he briefly rejoined the club for last year's playoff push, he made just a four-minute cameo appearance. LAFC's decision not to re-sign him for 2024 likely influenced his retirement decision.

From Arsenal to MLS Legend

Before becoming an MLS superstar, Vela's journey took him across Europe. Born in Cancún, he started with Chivas before Arsenal snapped him up as a 16-year-old prospect in 2005. After various loan spells, he found his footing at Real Sociedad in Spain, where he played for six seasons.

But it was in Los Angeles where Vela truly cemented his legacy. He earned four All-Star selections and three spots in the MLS Best XI. He holds the record as the fastest player in MLS history to reach 75 goals and 50 assists, and stands as the top Mexican goal-scorer in league history.

LAFC General Manager John Thorrington summed up Vela's impact perfectly: "From the beginning, Carlos has been more than just a player -- he has been the heartbeat, the captain and the face of LAFC."

Though his playing days are over, Vela isn't leaving LAFC completely. The club has named him its first Black & Gold Ambassador, where he'll help grow the LAFC brand and connect with supporters. For those looking at LAFC's prospects this season, this transition might signal a changing of the guard in their attacking options.

Fans can celebrate Vela's remarkable career on September 21 during "Noche de Carlos Vela" at BMO Stadium when LAFC faces Real Salt Lake. For anyone betting on that match, expect an emotional atmosphere that could fuel an inspired LAFC performance in honor of their departing legend.
