Broos Stands Firm: Mbokazi's MLS Move Not Challenging Enough.

Hugo Broos isn't backing down. The Bafana Bafana coach still thinks Mbekezeli Mbokazi made the wrong call by joining Chicago Fire in MLS. And the defender's impressive performances at AFCON have only made Broos more convinced he's right.

Mbokazi looked solid at the Africa Cup of Nations, showing real composure for a young player. But according to Broos, those displays proved exactly why the former Orlando Pirates star should have aimed higher. He believes the defender needs tougher competition week in and week out.

MLS has become a popular landing spot for older players looking for a good payday before retirement. The league is growing, sure, but Broos doesn't think it's intense enough for a player at Mbokazi's stage. He needs to be tested regularly against top opposition, not coasting through matches.

Europe Would Have Been Better

"When you look at his performances at AFCON, everyone can understand why I said what I said about him," Broos told SABC News. The coach is clearly frustrated that a player with this much talent chose America over Europe's elite leagues.

Broos believes Mbokazi could have been one of South Africa's best-ever defenders. But without weekly battles against world-class attackers, that potential might never be fully realized. "He needs a challenge, and I do not think he will find that challenge in Chicago," the coach added.

For punters watching Bafana Bafana's World Cup preparations, this is worth noting. If Mbokazi isn't getting sharp competitive matches at club level, it could affect his international form when it matters most. The national team needs all their best players firing on all cylinders.

Looking Ahead After AFCON Disappointment

Mbokazi's rise has been rapid. He went from Orlando Pirates' youth setup to the first team in quick time last season. His confident displays earned him international recognition and a significant role at AFCON.

Broos admitted the early tournament exit to Cameroon was tough to swallow. "We wanted to come back with the trophy, and I think the opportunity was there," he said. The team played well but lacked that bit of luck needed in knockout tournaments.

Now the focus shifts to World Cup preparation. Bafana Bafana need to rebuild confidence and momentum. Having players like Mbokazi competing at the highest level would make that job much easier. Instead, Broos will be hoping the MLS stint doesn't dull the defender's edge when South Africa needs him most.
