Boston Legacy FC: NWSL's Newest Team Reveals Fresh Identity After Rebranding.

Boston's NWSL team has a new name! The club will be called Boston Legacy Football Club when they join the league in 2026. This announcement comes after fans strongly rejected their initial choice of BOS Nation FC just five months ago.

The NWSL awarded Boston an expansion spot back in September 2023, giving them the longest runway to prepare for a debut season in league history. They'll enter alongside Denver as the league's 15th and 16th teams.

"Our name is just the beginning," said owner Jennifer Epstein. "It's what we build together, through dedication, commitment, and grit that will give it life. We aim for our values to reflect a city that breathes competition, passion, and pride."

Learning From Their Mistakes

The rebrand follows a PR disaster earlier this year. The team's original name launch included a marketing campaign called "Too Many Balls" that created serious backlash, especially from LGBTQ+ communities and local supporters.

The club quickly apologized and promised to do better. And they meant it! They surveyed 1,500 fans, collected over 500 name suggestions, and hosted focused listening groups to find the perfect identity.

The team set clear criteria for their new name. It needed to honor Boston's history, celebrate women's soccer, unite Bostonians, and stand the test of time. They also wanted to avoid colonial themes and not step on existing Boston women's teams' territory.

A Women's Soccer Homecoming

When Boston Legacy FC kicks off in 2026, it'll mark the return of top-flight women's soccer to New England after nearly a decade. The former Boston Breakers folded before the 2018 NWSL season after previous stints in earlier pro leagues.

The team hasn't revealed their official colors or crest yet, but teasers suggest they'll feature a bright green in their palette. For fans looking to back the new team, this early identity development offers a glimpse at what's to come.

"It's always a great day when women's professional soccer is back in Boston," said USWNT legend Kristine Lilly, who advised during the renaming process. "I look forward to watching the Boston Legacy build a club for a new generation while honoring those who helped build the game."

The name Legacy carries significant meaning, honoring the pioneering women who built professional soccer in Boston while creating excitement for a new chapter. For soccer fans and potential bettors alike, this team will be worth watching as they build their roster and culture ahead of their 2026 debut.
