Americans Now Drink Mate? USMNT Legend Details Messi's Revolutionary Impact on US Soccer.

Former US defender Marcelo Balboa has called Lionel Messi's impact in America nothing short of a 'revolution.' And it goes way beyond just what happens on the pitch. The Argentine superstar has transformed both club and local football since arriving last summer.

"Messi's arrival in MLS was a huge boost for many people to watch the league and get closer to local soccer," Balboa told TNT Sports. "A lot of jerseys have been sold, and it's been a revolution."

But here's where things get interesting. Balboa points out that Messi's influence extends to American culture itself. Players across the US are now regularly drinking mate – that traditional South American herbal drink Messi is famous for sipping during matches.

"When Messi arrived, many Americans started drinking mate without knowing what it was," Balboa explained. "I never thought I'd see Americans drinking mate while they were on the field."

Even the food scene is changing. Balboa noted that Argentine restaurants have popped up in places like Denver, serving empanadas and choripanes that were previously hard to find.

Messi's Success at Inter Miami

Since joining Inter Miami in July 2023, Messi has already delivered results. The Florida club has claimed two trophies – the Leagues Cup and the Supporters' Shield – with the Argentine leading the charge.

Inter Miami is currently competing in the FIFA Club World Cup. They're second in Group A after beating Porto 2-1 and drawing 0-0 with Al-Ahly. Their final group match against Palmeiras on June 23 could determine if they advance further.

Betting markets continue to favor Inter Miami in MLS matches when Messi is in the lineup. His presence typically shifts odds dramatically, with bookmakers adjusting lines by as much as 25% when he's confirmed to play.

Messi on His Relationship with Ronaldo

In other news, Messi recently clarified his relationship with long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo. The Argentine admitted they're not friends but maintain mutual respect.

"I have a lot of respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and for the career he's had and continues to have," Messi told DSports. "Each of us wanted to do the best for our team."

Messi explained that while they're not close off the pitch, their relationship has always been professional. "We're not friends obviously because we don't spend time together, but we've always treated each other with a lot of respect."

Between them, these two legends have amassed an incredible 13 Ballon d'Or awards. Now in the later stages of their careers, Messi continues with Inter Miami while Ronaldo captains Saudi Pro League's Al-Nassr.

Messi's move to MLS has clearly brought more than just high-quality football to American shores. It's created a cultural shift that few could have predicted – from drinking habits to dining options – proving his impact extends far beyond the 90 minutes on the field.
